About the work

I could write a book about this painting. In short it focusses on mental health and the loneliness it implies. I have suffered severe depression in my life and the experience had a huge impact on the direction, the themes and mission behind my artwork. The general message I try to convey by placing people in an abstract universe is that we are all born in a world without any meaning. As we grow up things are given a name and sense. But every name and sense is questionable. This means that we can change our view and perspective on life at any given moment. In a way my paintings are like a blank paper on which everyone can write his unique story.

This painting is a part of the ‘Mars series’ Too often depression and mental health issues are seen as a weakness. In my opinion and from my experience it is an extraordinary achievement to overcome it and definitely an open invitation for change.

The mirroring effect of the layered painting reflects you and makes you a part of the artwork.
